Arowana fish are freshwater bony fish with huge scales and lengthy body that are both attractive and fascinating to watch. Usually swims at the surface of the water, looking for prey. They are incredibly appealing because of their shining color and will brighten up your aquarium.

It has high popularity in eastern Asia because of its resemblance to the dragon, which is said to represent wealth, prosperity, luck, and strength. The Arowana fish is a freshwater fish belonging to the Actinopterygii family of ancient ray-finned fishes. Arowana comes from a variety of places, including South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

During the Jurassic period, the Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum bircurrhosum) split from its Asian and Australian counterparts (Scleropages spp.).

Arowana fish are aggressive swimmers who require plenty of room in the tank to turn and move around. In the wild, these fish have been known to jump up to 2 metres, so it’s best to cover your aquarium to keep your fish from jumping out and onto the living room floor. Water changes of 30-50% of the aquarium volume should be performed on a weekly basis.

Tank Environment

A single adult arowana fish requires at least 150 litres of water. pH Range: 6.0 to 7.4; as long as the pH is stable, they are highly tolerant of this range. Temperature ranges between 74 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Large wood will obstruct mobility or cause physical injury, so provide plenty of open swimming space. To avoid water fouling, remove any food that hasn’t been eaten.

In a well-kept aquarium, it can last 10 to 20 years or longer. The Arowana fish is a facultative air breather, meaning it can get oxygen from the air it breathes. Usually found near the top of the tank, and can be aggressive with smaller aquarium species. The Arowana fish is simple to keep but difficult to master in terms of bringing out its best colours.

Breeding

Arowana fish are mouth brooding fish, which means the male will carry the unhatched eggs in his mouth until they hatch. The males will not eat at this time. They’ll carry the eggs for 50-60 days until the fry hatch.
